Fibre-based packaging is experiencing a boom as sustainability remains a key aspect of packaging development. From diversifying the use of fibre-based materials to improving recycling properties and technologies, there are numerous developments that will see new fibre-based packaging concepts take on the packaging market.
Companies around the world are choosing fibre-based packaging from sustainably managed forests as alternatives to their traditional, often fossil-based materials. One of them is PEFC-certified paper and packaging manufacturer WestRock, whose innovative packaging solution EverGrowTM won the 2022 Singapore Packaging star award in the category Commercial Environmentally Sustainable Packaging.
EverGrowTM is designed to replace plastic totes, tills, trays, and punnets. The sturdy carton design allows for ventilation and protection, while ergonomic handles allow for grab-n-go convenience.
Working with packaging producer Universal Trays, WestRock opted for renewable, recyclable packaging using PEFC-certified KraftPak® and CustomKote® paper board.
“Sustainability has long been an important part of our company’s history – recycling and sustainable forest management are the fibre of our being,” said George D’Urso, director of Fiber Certification and Social Responsibility at WestRock.
“In 2022, we took an important step in our sustainability journey by setting more ambitious sustainability targets, including a 2025 target to make 100% of WestRock’s products recyclable, compostable or reusable, driving the transition to a more circular economy through cutting-edge innovation".
Certified paper packaging is preferred by environmentally conscious consumers, contributes to the company achieving its sustainability goals by reducing or eliminating plastic packaging.
“The move from plastic to paper-based packaging is a response to the need to reduce our use of plastic and reliance on fossil-based materials,” said Fabienne Sinclair, Head of Marketing at PEFC International.
“Consumers and shoppers are also paying more attention to environmentally friendly packaging and packaging waste. According to a study, more than six out of ten consumers state that the environmental impact of packaging affects their purchasing decisions,” she continued.
How can retailers and brand owners adopt Responsible Packaging?
PEFC’s approach to “Responsible Packaging” brings together the three Rs as part of a holistic sustainability solution that centres on forests.
Responsible packaging must be renewable, responsibly sourced, and recyclable, ensuring that fibre-based packaging never comes at the expense of forests. If sourced responsibly, it can be easily recycled multiple times into new products, is naturally biodegradable, and does not harm our planet.
Much like packaging manufacturers, brand owners and other packaging end-users need to demonstrate responsible sourcing to their buyers. The first step is to include PEFC in sourcing policies. Asking suppliers to use PEFC-certified materials helps drive sustainable change throughout the whole supply chain.
The PEFC label demonstrates a company’s commitment to responsible sourcing in a way that is visible, verifiable and readily understood.
